Webmasters are Turning the World Wide Web in to a World Wide Mess
In the Past
Web surfers could surf from site to site via the links section and
find lots of great sites to keep them occupied for hours on end without
ever having to visit a search engine. Much of what a surfer specifically
wanted to find could be stumbled across by glancing through a couple
of sites' link sections.
Today's Web
Now, unfortunately, the WWW is a much different landscape.
Webmaster greed has caused them to "hide" their link sections
or call it names like "Exchange Links with Us" because they
know that no one would click that link -other than webmasters.
The LIE here is believing that a visible link section containing other
quality sites -even competing sites- will cause you to lose visitors.
This is probably the most common webmaster misconception.
You won't lose a single visitor to your site via your links section
because no surfer in their right mind is going to click on your "Links"
link until they know for sure that they have what they need from your
site or that your site does NOT have what they need.
So, what if the visitor doesn't find what they want?
If you do not have a links section, they will just hit that little
'Back' button and go back to the search engine they most likely came
from. You still won't get a sale or a click. If you make your money
solely from banner/text ads on your site, you will still make that money.
If done well, the surfer will click those paid links before checking
a link exchange page. If not done well, they wouldn't have clicked anyway.
If you have a links section, you're just helping our your neighbor
websites and vice versa. You also help the web surfer and keep the search
engines' influence from getting out of control.
There is also a new trend that has been taking hold in the search engine
optimization (SEO) world and that is buying and selling links. Done
right, this can be an effective strategy for increasing traffic from
the selling sites and for helping to boost search rankings. Done wrong,
however, this tactic can pinpoint you as "manipulating" the
search results. Learn more about how to properly buy
links and sell links.
