Buy Links or Sell Links Safely!
Common Misuse / Search Engine Abuse:
- Link Buyers - buying with the sole intent of increasing
your PageRank or rankings in various search engines is high risk
- Link Sellers - selling links based 100% on a page's
PageRank (PR) and/or selling links to anyone and everyone is irresponsible
Below we will detail several no-no's for buying and selling links -many
of which are very prevelant among link sellers...
Sitewide links (in general) are bad. When it was first discovered
that each page is counted as a "vote", sitewide links became
an easy way to manipulate your search rankings. Obviously, though,
this is not desirable by the search engines. So, it is now frowned
upon --especially from Blog sites. There are some cases where a sitewide
link is acceptable, but they are few and far between.
Having ten (10) or more outbound links on a page that is not a "Reciprocal
Links" page is a red flag. This is not to say that you cannot
have more than ten (10) outbound links on a page, but if it's obvious
that your selling them; you had better make sure that your content
heavily outweighs the link area.
Grouping several outbound links together in a table within the footer
of a page is a tip-off that those links are probably "paid links"
--even if they are not.
Having several different links on several different pages is really
pushing the limits of fairness and begins to constitute the "selling
PR syndrome." This is where you may limit outbounds on a single
page to eight (8) or less, but sell 50, 100, or more across the entire
site. This should be an obvious no-no, but many sites do it.
Most webmasters now know to not link to bad neighborhoods -such as
PR0, Banned (grey toolbar), etc. But, many webmasters employ bad link
practices by selling to just anyone that wants a link. Remember, your
link (paid or not) is a vote. If you're not linking to "quality"
sites, then you're still at risk.
Our basic advice is that you should consider sites as follows:
- Assume that PageRank (PR) is NOT a factor.
- Judge the site requesting the paid link based on content and value
In other words, if the site requesting the link is a site you would
not mind otherwise linking to; then you're probably o-k. However, if
it's questionable, we recommend that you not let the money from selling
links outweigh being sensible and protecting your other link partners.
